Savor the Rhône
June 2026
One of the most apple to apple wine competitions we know of in the state - wineries were limited to entering a maximum of four wines - all of which had to be made of fruit grown in the Rogue Valley and produced in the region to be entered. The 2026 competition attracted more than 150 wine entries, resulting in a curated selection of standout wines from across the region. Savor Southern Oregon culminates by bringing together the region’s top wineries and winemaking talent for two unforgettable days so the attendees can taste as the judges did.
As acolytes of Randall Grahm we were also inspired by the Pacific NW tour of the Rhône Rangers and feeling a deep need to honor both... we present one Rhône-tastic mash up of medal winning wines made in the Rogue Valley.
About the Rhône
Rhône wine refers to wine produced in the Rhône Valley in southern France, celebrated for its bold reds, aromatic whites, and refreshing rosés. The region is divided into two distinct sub-regions, each defined by unique climates, soils, and grape varieties.
Northern Rhône
The Northern Rhône is renowned for producing powerful, single-varietal red wines and elegant whites from steep, terraced vineyards.
Red: Exclusively made from the Syrah grape, known for dark fruit flavors, black pepper, and distinct smoky/mineral notes. Notable appellations include Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage.
White: Produced from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne grapes, offering rich, floral, and aromatic profiles.
Southern Rhône
The Southern Rhône is a warmer, broader region famous for massive, complex red blends and approachable, everyday Côtes du Rhône.
Red Blends: Predominantly based on the Grenache grape, blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre (often referred to as a "GSM" blend). They are characterized by rich, sun-baked fruit, wild herbs (garrigue), and spice. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous and prestigious appellation here.
Fun Facts about Mourvèdre: it's grape heritage hails from Spain - AKA Monastrell (it's original name) - AKA Mataro (Australia)
White & Rosé: These make up a smaller percentage of production but provide crisp, fruit-forward, and mineral-driven drinking experiences.
